Here are all her tips for maxing out your lashes so you can finally kiss those falsies goodbye. Your first move? Get a hold of the new Hyper Lash Mascara!
WHY YOUR FORMULA MATTERS
Whether you’re a sparse lash girlie or wish your lashes looked much longer, chances are you will benefit from a multi-benefit mascara that does it all. The good news is, mascara innovation gets better every single day and finding that formula is easier than ever. Scan the mascara production description for key words like volumizing, lengthening and curling and start there. Hot tip: This new multitasking mascara will give you all the hype your lashes need in just a few swipes. It has a precision fibre brush that grabs every lash and a lightweight, non-clump formula that does not smudge or flake. It also comes in perfect-for-fall shades of brown and burgundy.
GRAB A LASH CURLER FIRST
If you’ve ever had your makeup done, you’ll know that makeup artists always use a lash curler. “Please curl your lashes prior to putting on mascara,” says Gray. She says doing it post mascara application can result in ripping out your lashes in a hurry (ouch!).
HOW YOU APPLY MASCARA COUNTS
Gray’s failsafe method for applying mascara is just four simple steps.
-
Begin by scraping the excess product off the wand
-
Starting from the bottom of the lashes and wiggling your way to the top, work in thin layers and let them dry out a bit before the next layer for maximum drama (she prefers three to four coats each eye so as not to get that dreaded spidery effect)
-
For extra definition, use a lash comb on individual lashes, making sure there are no clumps
-
With the remnants of mascara left on the wand, coat the lower lashes and be careful not to apply too much as it could smudge
CLEAN UP MISTAKES WITH THIS GENIUS HACK
Mascara mishaps aren’t a big deal when you know how to deal with them. Steal this trick from Gray who says it’s her go-to cleaning tip. “Wait until the mascara smudge is completely dry, then take a clean mascara spoolie and flick the smudges off. If done correctly, this will not disturb any of the shadow, liner, foundation, or concealer under it.”
MAKE SURE YOUR MASCARA IS LOCKED IN
Are you the type to get a bad case of racoon eyes at the end of the day? Your skin type could be the culprit. “Those with more oilier skin tend to have problems with mascara smudging, as oil breaks down makeup,” advises Gray. Try this waterproof Hyper Lash formula for starters. If that doesn’t work, she recommends tubing formulas because of their lasting power.
RAPID FIRE DOS AND DON’TS MASCARA EDITION
Is pumping your mascara before application necessary?
There’s no need to do this if it’s new, says Gray. She says it’s only necessary for ensuring there’s product throughout the bristles and not just on the tip of the brush.
How can you make mascara last longer without drying out?
“Limit pumping as every time the tube opens, it allows air into it and dries the product out,” she says. “You should really be replacing your mascara every three months anyways, so I just say replace the tube.”
How many coats of mascara should you apply?
“This entirely depends on how long or how voluminous you desire your lashes to be,” says Gray. “More coats equals more drama and length so you just have to be wary about clumps.”
How do you properly remove mascara?
She prefers to double cleanse with a makeup cleansing balm to break down all the makeup, including stubborn mascara, whether it's waterproof or not. You can also use a micellar water first before cleansing.
