Ask The Expert
- What's your personal step-by-step to achieving perfect liquid eyeliner?
-
"This is my perfect fool proof way of how I use liquid eyeliner. Number one, I draw out the shape using a pencil eyeliner first. Make sure to also tight line your lash line for extra depth. Now that we have the map for where to put your liquid liner, it’s a piece of cake. I love Catrice’s Calligraph Pro Precise 20H Matte liner, which is super matte and does not have a sheen to it at all, which for me, works better for film, photography, and TV. Simply just go over the shape you made and then we la, the most perfect deep, rich liquid liner application. Layering liners also amplifies the staying power, so you know this is going to last all day long! Just make sure you wait until it dries completely, I always recommend keeping your eyes down and to take a hand fan to make sure" -Emily Gray
- What are the different types of bronzer finishes and when are they best used?
-
“The different types of bronzer finishes are matte, shimmer, or natural. I usually prefer to use a more natural finish as it reads more cohesive with the makeup that I typically do, however I use more matte finishes when I’m doing red carpet makeup. For instance, Catrice Summer Obsession Bronzer has beautiful matte bronzers! Matte is better with bright lights. However, it's truly all about preference!” -Emily Gray
- What is a contour product and what is its makeup purpose?
-
- “Contour is a shading product that helps mimic shadows on the face. We use contour to create dimension and sculpt the face. I use a lot of cream products for contour, for example, Catrice’s Sculp & Charm Contour Sticks are the perfect cool tones for carving out the face and they blend so seamlessly into any base. They are also vegan, cruelty free, and fragrance free.” -Emily Gray
- What are your favorite tubing mascaras?
-
- "I love Catrice’s TUBING Stay In Place Volume Mascara and its such a great affordable, cruelty free, vegan option, which is a rare find in the tubing mascara category. I feel like those mascaras are almost always on the expensive side! The formula is easy to take off at the end of the day. Perfect for people who have a hard time with mascaras running down their face throughout the day." -Emily Gray
- What are your tips for applying blush on each face shape (round, heart, long, square, etc)?
-
- "This general idea of embracing the natural structure of your features and where you flush naturally can be applied to every single face shape. I love using liquid or cream blush for this technique, Catrice’s Blushin’ Charm Multi Stick has been my go to this summer. The shades are gorgeous and the vegan formula blends like a dream, which is perfect for this technique. I’ll use my fingers to apply, find the apples of the cheeks, and blend everywhere you would naturally flush. To add a little sun burnt effect, I’ll even blend it across the nose." -Emily Gray
- Are there any highlighters you recommend?
-
- "For everyday glow kinda energy, I absolutely love Catrice’s Soft Glam Filter Fluid. You can use this under your foundation for something more subtle or you can put it on top for a more poppy highlight, either way with its extensive shade range, the highlight will blend perfectly into your complexion. Not to mention it’s a deal at only 10 dollars, while also being cruelty free, vegan, and fragrance free (great for those with sensitive skin). Alternatively, if you love a classic powder highlight, Catrice’s More Than Glow Highlighter is gorgeous. My favorite shade for the summer is “003 beyond golden glow” which is a stunning golden hue! It’s silky and the ideal shimmer." -Emily Gray
- Is cream or liquid concealer better for mature skin?
-
- "Both cream and liquid are great for mature skin, it is truly based on the formula in what you’re trying. My favorite cream concealer specifically for the under eye is the Catrice under eye brightener because it is very hydrating and offers good color, correction and coverage." -Melissa Hurkman
- What are your favorite tips and tricks for blurry makeup? Any product recommendations?
-
- "For blush, I love the Catrice Cosmetics Velvet Pudding Blurring Blush. It really does the work for you—the velvety texture blends seamlessly into the skin and instantly creates that soft-focus effect. My personal favorite shade is 010 Raspberry Fudge for a natural, flushed cheek. For lips, I always start with a lip liner and use a small pencil brush to diffuse the edges so there’s no harsh line between the lip and the surrounding skin. I love the Catrice Plumping Lip Liner because it subtly enhances the pout as you wear it. To finish, I tap on a small amount of a plumping lip gloss and press it into the lips with my fingers. This keeps the application smooth, thin, and perfectly blurred rather than overly shiny or heavy." -Melissa Hurkman
- What types of products work best for textured skin/ products you'd recommend?
-
- "The types of products that work the best for textured skin are going to be more matte foundations, concealers, and powders. For foundations, pick a matte foundation. I like something buildable, so you can really play up the coverage in the areas that need more. I’m obsessed with Catrice’s HD Liquid Coverage Foundation. It’s extremely buildable, also so lightweight! This formulation would be ideal for someone with more textured skin. It’s a breathable matte that is waterproof, cruelty free, and longwear. Not to mention a complete steal at only $10! For concealers, I also would suggest something more matte, for liquids, I love Catrice’s True Skin High Cover Concealer. This is a great concealer for both under the eyes and spot concealing. It has a natural finish, but can easily be set with a pressed powder. This formula won’t sink into the texture, as it’s lightweight, and it will help diminish any texture. It’s vegan, cruelty free, oil free, and waterproof as well. Lastly, I think the most important product for textured skin is powder. Powder is my top product for blurring any texture on the skin. For a great vegan, affordable option, I love Catrice’s Bright & Blur Loose Powder! The keyword being blur in this instance, it helps to blur any texture where the powder is placed. I love using a powder puff and stamping the product in. A must have for anyone with textured skin!" -Emily Gray
- What is the difference between drugstore palettes and high-end luxury palettes?
-
- "I used to think that the difference between drugstore palettes and high-end luxury palettes were the ingredients, and although sometimes that may be true on certain circumstances, I’ve come to the conclusion that the true differences between drugstore palettes and high-end luxury palettes are affordability and where the palettes are sold. My mother never bought me drugstore makeup and insisted to me in my youth that those kinds of products would make me break out (I was already an acne prone teen). It took me a while to get over those ideas that were so ingrained into me, but I started to realize through brands like Catrice that it wasn’t the case at all. It is in fact possible to have formulas that are affordable, perform beautifully, and do not break me out. I love Catrice’s Blooming Bliss Slim Eyeshadow Palette. It has a beautiful mix of matte and shimmer shades, as well as a gorgeous color story (perfect for spring and summer!). It’s vegan, cruelty free, fragrance free, and alcohol free, making it wonderful for those with sensitive skin. Plus, it’s affordable at only $10." -Emily Gray
- Are there any methods or techniques when it comes to application that helps create the glass skin look?
-
- "Yes! There are definitely methods and techniques when it comes to application that help create the glass skin. Skincare is the upmost importance. Cleanse your skin and pat dry, then go in with a toner, to follow with a hydrating serum. I have extremely dry sky, so I’ll follow with a facial oil and a moisturizer, if you have normal/oily skin, you do not need to do both, unless you want extra hydration to the skin. On the moisturizer step, really work it into your skin, massage the product, this will help with absorption, any puffiness, and give your skin that glass skin appearance. Now for the makeup step, follow with a glow boosting primer, the new Catrice Skin Glaze Hydrating primer is absolutely perfect for this technique. It illuminates with a pearl finish, makes makeup long lasting, and its a vegan and cruelty free formula. I like to go a bit extra glow, so next for the base, choose a really luminous and reflective foundation base product. The perfect pair to the Skin Glaze serum primer is Catrice’s new Soft Glam Filter Fluid. There maybe a lot of these types of products on the market, but Catrice’s has some of the best shades. Especially if you are really pale. This is a sheer/medium coverage, so I would also spot conceal in areas that need it. Follow using your usual brightening concealer and set with minimal powder. I also recommend using a luminous blush and bronzer to go seamless with the glass skin glow. My choice would be Catrice’s Soft Glam Baked Blush. For bronzer, try Catrice’s Melted Sun Cream Bronzer. There you have it the glass skin face! Maintain the look by carrying around a pressed powder and powdering the areas that become too oily." -Emily Gray
- What are your tips for covering dark circles (skin prep, application, etc.)?
-
- "My recommendation for covering dark circles is to start with skin prep, specifically a great eye cream. For one that works well under makeup, I recommend Catrice’s Caffiene Kick Under Eye Serum, the formula is gel-like and thin, ideal for the delicate under eye area. After letting the product soak into the skin, go over with a color correcting product, I usually do a cream or a liquid formulation. My current favorites are the Catrice Under Eye Brightener Liquids, a shade for every skintone, and the formulation is thin, lightweight, but still covers all discoloration! After that color corrector is blended out completely, go over with a bit of concealer. For the under eyes area I like to use a concealer that is one to two shades lighter than the complexion. Pick a concealer formulation that is thin and hydrating, as the under eyes are the thinnest skin on the face. I love to use Catrice’s True Skin High Cover Concealer for those reasons! You only need a little product once you have properly color corrected the under eyes. To make the products stay in place all day and night, set the area with a pressed or loose powder. If you’re looking for an affordable option, Catrice’s Under Eye Brightener Setting Powder is finely milled and further helps color correct any discoloration on the under eyes." -Emily Gray
- What are some of your favorite ways to feel like your best self? in terms of makeup?
-
- "If I need to look like my best self with makeup, I’m starting with a glowy base with a sheer to medium amount of coverage. I would reach for a foundation like Catrice’s Soft Glam Filter Fluid, which is ultra lightweight, radiant, and keeps my dry skin hydrated throughout the day. I would lean on the sheerer side and blend well using either a dense brush or beauty sponge. Like everyone, I have darker undereyes, so I would put a bit of concealer. Next, adding some color to the face, I definitely need that to look not washed out (pale girl who rarely sees the outside here). Cream bronzer is my best friend, so I’ll grab some Catrice’s Melted Sun Cream and bounce it across my forehead, the sides of my cheeks, and a bit down my nose. Next, we need some blush, I still very much prefer cream. I will set the my undereyes and sides of my nose lightly, which also helps blur any pores or unwanted lines on my face. I won’t do much to my eyes, but I do like a little brown sparkle to my lids, the new Catrice Coral Crush Slim Eyeshadow Palette has just the right colors for this. Then I’ll curl my lashes and apply a lengthening mascara. To look my best, I will not overly fill in my eyebrows, a tinted fiber gel is what I prefer. Now my lips are my favorite feature and I love a little pop of color on them. I will overline slightly on my cupids bow and bottom lip using Catrice’s Plumping Lip Liner in a nude shade and follow with a tinted lip oil. The red shade, Drama Mama, from Catrice’s new Glossin’ Glow Tinted Lip Oil is the perfect amount of color and shine for my best self makeup look! There you have its, my go to best self makeup look." -Emily Gray
- How do you set your makeup and ensure it lasts during makeup prep?
-
- "I personally set my makeup through powder first. I’ll grab a loose powder (Catrice’s Soft Blur Matte Setting powder is great for this!) on a powder puff after all my base is applied (foundation, concealer, cream contour or bronzer). I’ll dab off any excess powder on the palm of my hand, so there isn’t too much powder. Then I’ll go in and stamp the areas where I put concealer and any cream products. Then I’ll finish the eyes and lips. My last step is always a strong setting spray, I love Catrice’s Ultra Last2 fixing spray which will keep your makeup on for up to 18 hours of wear. Plus the formula is vegan, cruelty free, and is only $8." -Emily Gray
- How can we find the best blush color for our skin tone?
-
- "When choosing a blush color, the cooler your undertone, the more pink you want to go with your blush (ex. Catrice Blush Affair Cream & Powder in the shade “pleasing pink”)”. If you have a warmer complexion, the more peach you should go (ex. Catrice Blush Affair Cream & Powder in the shade “peach passion”). Also, “a universal shade on everyone is red”. This mimics blood flow and looks natural on everybody." -Emily Gray
- Have you done makeup on mature skin, and if so, what kinds of eyeliners have you trusted?
-
- "I have done many makeup applications on mature skin, I like to personally use a waterproof or resistant eyeliner pencil that I can blend out slightly and soften. I think softer eyeliner looks the best on mature eyes. I love Catrice’s 20H Ultra Precision Gel Eye Pencil Waterproof! 20 Brownie is my favorite for mature eyes as it's a dark brown instead of black. The liner is buildable, long lasting, and waterproof. Not to mention vegan, cruelty free, and affordable at only 5 dollars." -Emily Gray

Animal Testing
- Does Catrice test on animals?
-
Catrice cosmetics is owned by Cosnova Beauty from Germany where animal testing for cosmetic products has not been permitted since 1998. All of Catrice products comply with the European and American ingredient, manufacturing, and testing standards. Our suppliers are also held to these same standards and we only partner with the ones that do not test on animals.
- What does the law have to say about “testing on animals”?
-
In the European Union, the sale of cosmetics products that have been tested on animals has been prohibited since 2004. The cosmetic industries of various countries of the European union have voluntarily refrained from doing so since1989. And since 2009, products with ingredients that have been tested on animals, especially for cosmetic purposes, are also forbidden. The transitional period ended in 2013. This means that by law, any cosmetics product marketed in the European union is free of animal testing. this applies also to all products marketed by Catrice globally. But there’s another important fact you need to know: the so-called REACH regulation (registration, evaluation & authorization of chemicals) came into force in 2009. This regulation covers chemical policy requirements, which say that all ingredients must be proven to be safe – no matter whether they are well-known or brand new, synthetic or natural. in this case, “safe” means that the ingredients in the finished product will not lead to any negative health effects upon application. Nowadays, the cosmetics industry implements alternative testing methods instead of testing on animals. Alternative tests are in-vitro-tests – i.e. tests without live organisms! By the way, “in vitro” is latin and means “in a glass”. But – and this is a big “but”: many cosmetic ingredients are also used for other purposes. Almond oil, for example, is often used in cosmetics but it is also used for manufacturing other products such as pharmaceuticals. By law, medical ingredients can and must still be tested on animals to prove that they are safe for use. At least if no authorized alternative test is available. Such ingredients may later also be used in cosmetics. The important thing is: ingredients are not allowed to be tested on animals especially for cosmetics purposes. If your head isn’t spinning yet, you can read more about it here: In English: https://www.cosmeticseurope.eu/
- Where does Catrice stand on animal testing?
-
Testing on animals is a no-go for Catrice. We do not conduct animal testing and do not commission anyone else to do so either. Not in the European union or anywhere else in the world. We never have and we never will. the contracts with our clients state that they must manufacture products in compliance with European union law, which strictly prohibits testing on animals. To us, this is a matter of course – and always has been on a voluntary basis – because we know that we can manufacture good and safe products without torturing animals. In the cosmetics industry, alternative tests have been used for many years instead of testing on animals. However, it is practically impossible to prove that a cosmetics product is totally free of animal testing. This applies without exception. This is because the ingredients may, for example (as already mentioned in question 1), have already been tested on animals for medical purposes. If there is no alternative method available, the pharmaceuticals industry still has to test on animals by law. Also, other laws apply for suppliers in countries outside of the European union. So it could happen that an ingredient has been tested on animals somewhere in the world – but since 2013, not for a cosmetics company that markets its products in Europe. Then there are the raw materials that have been tested on animals in the past. Some even decades ago when animal testing was still legal. Although we are in no way responsible for these tests, they cannot be undone. Many of these raw materials are still used in cosmetics – including for brands that have never conducted or commissioned testing on animals themselves. Because we are strictly against testing on animals, it is extremely important to us to explain these details! Luckily, work is underway to stop animal testing in all industries and countries as soon as possible and replace it with alternative testing methods. However, these methods have to be legally approved before they can replace animal testing. this is a real scientific challenge, which many companies are already facing with great commitment.
- Does Catrice test raw materials on animals?
-
No. This has been prohibited in Europe since 2009, but we didn’t conduct animal testing before that, either. Not for our products and not for our raw materials either. We believe that beauty is no reason to torture animals. There are very good ingredients available to us even without animal testing. We try to use ingredients that have been used safely in cosmetics for a long time. Almond oil, for example. It has been used in lipsticks, creams, foundation and nail care for years and is proven to be harmless as well as extremely effective. But even in the case of such a natural ingredient, we cannot guarantee that it has never been tested on animals by another company within keeping of the chemical policy regulations mentioned in question 1. for example, this may have occurred in accordance with the legal requirements valid at that time (when animal testing was still allowed in Europe), for medical purposes or for a company outside of the European union. We can, however, guarantee that we have never conducted testing on animals ourselves and have never commissioned anyone else to do so.
- I’ve read several blogs that claim that Catrice does test on animals. Is this true? Or have you tested on animals in the past?
-
No. We never have and never will test on animals. please take a look at where we explain what Catrice thinks about testing on animals!
- Is a product that has never been tested on animals still safe?
-
There’s nothing to worry about! To begin, there are the chemical policy requirements, which require proof of safety for all ingredients. For every product marketed in the European Union, the safety of each product is confirmed by trained specialists. Furthermore, we make use of alternative testing methods and commission laboratories to carry out in-vitro tests – this kind of testing is conducted in test tubes without live organisms. So you can enjoy your Catrice products without worrying about your safety!
- Even if testing on animals for cosmetics purposes is forbidden in the European Union, I’ve heard that new ingredients have to be tested on animals. Is this true?
-
To begin, the ban on animal testing doesn’t just apply to finished cosmetics products, but also to the raw materials used – if they are exclusively used for cosmetics! As the safety of all ingredients has to be ensured in accordance with the chemical policy regulations, the cosmetics industry uses alternative testing methods instead of animal tests. If these alternative methods cannot prove that an ingredient is safe, it will not be used. But you should know that many raw materials are also used in pharmaceuticals, for example. As medicine is particularly important, the legislation is totally different here. In this case, ingredients are tested on animals if no other approved alternative methods are available. Although these tests are not conducted for the cosmetics industry, they do sometimes apply to ingredients that may later be used in the production of cosmetics.
- What about Catrice products that are manufactured outside of the European Union, for example, in China? Do you test those on animal?
-
No, we do not conduct testing on animals for these products either! Firstly, because we don’t want to, and secondly, because we would not be allowed to sell these products in Europe for legal reasons! Although animal testing was even mandatory for products sold in China until 2014, this doesn’t apply to Catrice because we do not sell our products in China. Our suppliers have to comply with the rules of the country where the products will be sold. And the European union law clearly states that testing on animals for cosmetics products and their ingredients is forbidden.
- Can you really ensure that no testing on animals is conducted for products that are manufactured outside of Europe?
-
Yes, we can. And we are even legally obliged to do so: our suppliers must comply with our strict criteria as well as the law – this means that they have to manufacture our products in accordance with European Union legislation, which says that testing on animals is forbidden. We promise that there are no loopholes or tricks!
- If you do not test on animals, why don’t your products have a signet or seal like that “Leaping Bunny seal”?
-
Because for European cosmetics companies, it goes without saying that no animal tests have been conducted – after all, animal testing has been forbidden by the European Union regulation since 2009! And if something is self-explanatory, we do not write it on our products. The bunny symbol only makes sense in countries where testing on animals for cosmetics purposes is still allowed. In the USA, for example, brands can use this symbol to inform the public or for advertising purposes since not everyone manufactures their products without testing on animals. In European countries, on the other hand, this would only lead to confusion since it is forbidden to test on animals for cosmetics products anyway. According to the organization “cruelty free”, the European Union countries and India are pioneers in the ban on animal testing for cosmetics. Although this is great, it would be even better if we weren’t so lonely at the top and other countries would join us soon – for a world free of animal testing!
